It's the Thunder Mountain Twirlers' New Years Square Dance on Friday, Dec. 27! Bill George will call mainstream from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., with a plus tip at the end of the evening. Lisa Wall will cue rounds. Only $4 for members, $5 for non-members, and free for non-dancers to come watch and socialize! A-B-C Fun Dance starts at 6 p.m., and is free for first timers! Birders of all levels are invited to participate in an upcoming bird walk sponsored by the Friends of the San Pedro River on Saturday, Dec. 28, at 9 a.m., and depart from the San Pedro House, 9800 Highway 90, east of Sierra Vista at the river. There is no charge for the walks, however, donations are accepted to support docent programs. Greyhounds of Sierra Vista will conduct a greyhound adoption day on Saturday Dec. 28, for Sierra Vista and the surrounding area. Adoptions will be from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and will be held at PetSmart, 4267 E. Highway 90, in Sierra Vista. Greyhounds make outstanding pets, getting along with children, other dogs and pets. The program is also in need of temporary home for these beautiful dogs.

The Knights Of Columbus New Year's Eve Party will be held at 156 Kayetan Drive in Sierra Vista between 9 p.m., and 1 a.m. The evening will feature country dance music by Stones. Hors d'oeuvres early in the evening and a full blown breakfast with a menudo bar will be served after midnight. There will be door prizes, party favors, champagne for a midnight toast and 50/50 raffles during the evening. Cost of the event is $30 for a single and $55 per couple. The event is open to the public and tickets may be purchased at the KofC Hall between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Table reservations for parties of eight or 10 are available. Suzanne Arnold, long-time area resident and retired special education school teacher, will speak on her new book, 'Hereford, The History of a Forgotten Frontier Town,' at Westerners Club on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m., at Bisbee Senior Center. She will share her extensive research going back to the 1870s and bring to life a story of the true West in our own backyard. Public is welcome at this free program. Refreshments will be served. There will be no January meeting of the Sierra Vista Genealogy Club since it falls on a holiday. We would like to encourage members to attend the Amazing Arizona Series, this one is '406 Years of Immigration to America.' Brian Gratton is the speaker and is sponsored by the Sierra Vista Historical Society. It will be held on Tuesday Jan. 7, 2014 at the Ethel Berger Center on Tacoma street at 1 p.m.


In collaboration with the Smithsonian Institute and the Arizona Humanities Council, and Sierra Vista Library, the Sierra Vista Historical Society is hosting a series of presentations called Journey Stories. The third presentation in the series of Amazing Arizona 2013 stories will be '406 Years of Immigration to America; Ethnicity, Public Opinion, and Policy' with Brian Gratton. Professor Gratton is with the Department of History at Arizona State University and a widely published author on immigration and immigration policy in the United Sates, Latin America, and Europe. The Patterson Observatory and the Huachuca Astronomy Club invite everyone to view the night sky through various telescopes on Thursday, Jan. 9, starting at about 6:30 p.m., weather permitting. The observatory is located on the campus of the University of Arizona, Sierra Vista, at 1140 N. Colombo Drive, just east of Cochise College. This event is free to all, but donations to the University South Foundation, which owns the observatory, will be greatfully accepted.


The January meeting of the Huachuca Astronomy Club will be held at 7 p.m. on Jan. 10 in the science lecture hall, room 1110 of the science building of Cochise College, Sierra Vista Campus. The guest speaker will be Dr. Vishnu Reddy from the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz. Dr. Reddy's primary focus is the surface composition of asteroids. He is also a member of the Framing Camera () team on 's Dawn mission to the asteroids Vesta and Ceres. His talk is entitled 'The Dawn Mission to the Dwarf Planet Ceres: Opportunities for Amateur Astronomers.' The meeting is free and open to the public. A door prize will be awarded.


The first steak fry of the New Year at Huachuca City Post 10342 will be hosted Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, from 5-6:30 p.m. The dinner, steak grilled to order, with all the trimmings costs $8, with dessert an additional $1. The is located at 1301 N. Cochise, in Huachuca City, just off Hwy 90. No reservations are required and the dinner is open to the general public.


The Joseph Wytko Saxophone Quartet will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at the Buena Little Theatre, sponsored by the Buena Bands. Donations will be accepted to support the Buena Band Association's Project Uniform. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music styles and features Joseph Wytko, Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University; Anna Marie Wytko, Assistant Professor of Music at Kansas State University; Harout Boyajian, music faculty member at Chandler High School; and Kevin Gorman, a prolific performer and repeat winner in the prestigious Carmel and Coleman Chamber Music Competitions in California. The Cochise County Youth Orchestra is now welcoming violin, viola, cello and string bass players to join in the fun next semester, which starts on Tuesday, Jan. 14 and runs through May 7, 2014. The orchestra also offers beginning and intermediate classes for students with less playing experience. Students who have been playing at least one year and are currently taking private lessons, or who pass an audition, are invited to join the more advanced youth orchestra. Elementary through high school age youth are welcome. Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays after school at Calvary's Rock Church, 231 N. Canyon Drive in Sierra Vista. The Huachuca Area Republican Women's Club will meet for lunch on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at Pueblo del Sol Country Club. Registration and social time begins at 10:30 a.m. which will be followed by lunch and a program at 11 a.m. Guest speaker will be the Arizona Director of Americans for Posterity, Mr. Tom Jenney. His focus will be the ' Legislative Scorecard' and how they select the bills they follow, then how they score the Legislators, and how we as voters can use this information to keep our Legislators aware of where we stand on these issues and in turn influence their votes. The Sierra Vista Symphony plans to honor area teachers at its upcoming January winter concert by giving them complimentary tickets to the show. The concert is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at the Buena High School Performing Arts Center. Teachers wanting free tickets to the show titled, 'Impressionism,' should contact their school office for details. The Illegitimate Theater Company will be holding auditions for its spring production of 'Too Soon For Daisies' by William Dinners and William Morum. The University of Arizona Cochise County Cooperative Extension will be presenting a free child health and safety workshop on 'Healthy Habits for Your Child's Healthy New Year.' Patrick Kell, the Southwest Regional Director for the International Mountain Bicycling Association, is coming to Sierra Vista to present 'Better Living Through Trails' to the community on Jan. 30, 2014, at 6 p.m. at the Oscar Yrun Community Center. While is a bicycling organization, all trail users, hikers, nordic hikers, bikers, equestrians, trail runners, dog walkers and others are invited. This presentation covers the community health and economic benefits created through interconnected trail systems for all abilities.
