Trench coat a spring fashion staple

March 5th, 2014 | by Cathi Aycock | Comments

It's March and that means crazy weather, with on-again, off-again spring. You'll need a few must-haves to get you through this month and next. At the top of my list is an investment piece that should be in every woman's closet: a trench coat. You can throw it over spring outfits when it's rainy or cold, wear it as a casual coat or over an evening gown. It adds instant chic to everything from denim to diamonds.

Opt for a lined trench in a length that works with trousers, jeans or dresses, slightly above or slightly below the knee. Less is more when it comes to a trench, so skip the embellishment, save the classic buttons and belt. While camel or khaki are tried-and-true colors, navy, putty and gray will work for a modern spin. Buy the best you can afford, as this is a wardrobe workhorse that will last for decades.

Already have a classic? A trench with a pop of color is a fun addition to your spring wardrobe. Pink short trench, $175 at Banana Republic.

This putty color is a fresh spin. New Classic Trench, $225 at Banana Republic.

This is my go-to layering piece for spring. Throw it over a long sleeve tee on chilly mornings for instant chic. Lauren Ralph Lauren Boat Neck Linen Poncho, $189 at Nordstrom.

These workhorse boots look chic with jeans - miles better than any other all-weather boots worn to slog through snow and rain. (Hint: They sell out right before Steeplechase, so invest now if you plan to attend.) Hunter boots, $140 at Nordstrom.

Ouidad Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel gives you sleek style and then keeps working to combat humidity and frizz. $23 at Sephora.
