Two visually impaired models open showcase at PHL Fashion Week

Though the question of elitism in fashion has been up in the air for quite a while, there is no denying that it was made a little more democratic and socially responsible in this little corner of the world during Philippine Fashion Week.

Two visually impaired models-Arjhessa Espiritu and Czarinah Mercado-opened the showcase of designer Audie Espino's (AudieAE) EsAc collection on day four.

Both of them, sporting crinkly sundresses-one black, one orange-walked down the runway with the help of white canes.

'This season, the company has decided to bring attention to the status of the visually-impaired and therefore collaborated with two particular organizations - the Philippine Blind Union (PBU) and the Nationwide Organization of Visually-Impaired Empowered Ladies (NOVEL),' according to the press release.

The PBU 'aims to work 'towards the attainment of proper education, rehabilitation, employment, and general welfare of visually impaired persons and their integration into the mainstream of society,' while NOVEL 'is a unified team of women with varying degrees of visual impairment, which aims to unite everyone especially women with sight disability to be self-empowered, intellectually equipped and economically independent.' - Vida Cruz/BM, GMA News
