'Arizona's 2014 Political Climate and Voter Registration Trends' will be explained by Christine Rhodes, Recorder for Cochise County, at a meeting of the Democratic Women of Southeastern Arizona on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at the Pueblo del Sol Country Club in Sierra Vista. The University of Arizona Cochise County Cooperative Extension will be presenting a 'Picky Preschoolers' workshop at the Sierra Vista Health and Social Services Department. This free nutrition class will include: nutrition tips for young children, teaching healthy eating habits, introducing new foods, handling picky eaters, and much more. On Wednesday, Feb. 19, the public is invited to a Brown Bag Lunch Lecture by Liza and Robert Weissler on Croatia. Twenty years after a war that tore the area apart, Croatia, and particularly the Dalmatian Coast, are once again tourist destinations, yet still somewhat 'undiscovered.' Join us for a travelogue that touches on the best of Croatia including outdoor activities, culture, food, wine, and history. The Cochise College Center for Lifelong Learning at the Sierra Vista Campus will be the location for this free event. Birders of all levels are invited to participate in upcoming bird walks sponsored by the Friends of the San Pedro River. The walks are scheduled for every Wednesday on Feb. 19, 26, and also the fourth Saturday on Feb. 22 at 8 a.m., and depart from the San Pedro House, 9800 Highway 90, east of Sierra Vista at the river. There is no charge for the walks but donations are accepted to support docent programs. Sierra Vista Camera Club will meet Wednesday Feb. 19, at the Sierra Vista Library, Mona Bishop Room fro 5-6:30 p.m. The program this month will be two presentations: 'Red Tail Hawks Short Stories from the Wild,' and 'Wild and not so wild Life.' The Sierra Vista Camera Club welcomes any anyone with an interest in photography. If you're interested in digital or film, still or movie, from novice to advanced, we encourage you to attend. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday each month and provide opportunities to learn from others as well as be entertained by member or guest programs. On Feb. 20, the Friends of the San Pedro River will host Dr. Deni Seymour, the foremost expert on the history and archeology of the San Pedro River valley. He will talk about Captain Francisco Tovar of Santa Cruz de Terrenate. Tovar was the first commandant of the Presidio and spent fewer than eight months at the post before being killed in the line of duty. The presentation will take place at the Sierra Vista Ranger District public meeting room at 4070 S. The Happy Achers' Senior Group of the United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Buffalo Soldier Trail and St. Andrews Drive, will have its monthly potluck on Thursday Feb. 20. The Sierra Vista Area Gardeners Club will meet on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 1:30 p.m., in the Constable's Office in the old County Complex at 4100 East Foothills Drive. Next month the starting time will return to 1 p.m. This month's featured speaker is Bill Cook who will discuss 'Propagation: Seed Germination.' Sierra Vista Regional Health Center and Hospice, Casa de la Paz, invites the public, friends and family members of any patients who have passed away or received hospice care to celebrate their life and honor their memory. We will host two memorial services, one in Sierra Vista and another in Douglas. The Sierra Vista Historical Society will host a luncheon and speaker event at Pueblo del Sol Country Club, 2770 St. Andrew's Drive in Sierra Vista on Friday, Feb. 21. Annie Graeme Larkin, a University of Arizona graduate and curator of the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum, comes from a pioneer Bisbee family who arrived in the mining camp during 1883. It was her fascination with the community's past that led her to preserving Bisbee's history and collecting postcards of the area. Some of the vintage postcards offer a glimpse of the now gone communities of Lowell, Jiggerville and Johnson Addition, which disappeared with the development of the Lavender Pit Mine. Copies of Larkin's book will be available for purchase and author signing. Doors open at 11 a.m., with a buffet lunch served at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $15 per person and reservations are required. Fry Firefighters will have a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Sierra Vista Elks Lodge. This is an all you can eat pancake breakfast, with one side of bacon or sausage. Tickets are $6 each. All money raised will go to fund the Fry Firefighters 'Supplies for the Wise' school supplies drive. The Friends of the San Pedro River will conduct an interpretive walk along the river Saturdays at 9 a.m. on Feb. 22. All walks depart from the San Pedro House, 9800 Highway 90, east of Sierra Vista at the river. The San Pedro River features some of the richest wildlife habitat in the United States. Here you'll find 82 species of mammals, dozens of reptiles and amphibians and nearly 350 species of birds. There is no charge for the walks but donations are accepted to support the docent programs. AZgreyhounds of Sierra Vista will conduct a greyhound adoption day on Saturday, Feb. 22, at PetSmart, 4267 E. Highway 90, in Sierra Vista, from from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The dogs available are all ex-racers, recently retired from the track. Greyhounds make outstanding pets, getting along with children, other dogs and pets. Greyhounds are gentle, loving, intelligent animals only requiring all the love and affection you can give.


The Sierra Vista Environmental Operations Park, also known as the wastewater treatment plant, is open for bird walks each Sunday morning. The walks take about two hours and are led by docents from Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory, Huachuca Audubon Society, and the Friends of the San Pedro River. The next walk begins at 8 a.m., on Feb. 23 and depart from the viewing platform inside the . The entrance is located on Highway 90 between mileage markers 324 and 325 on the north side of the highway. All tours are free, although donations are accepted. The Thunder Mountain Marine Corps League Detachment 1283, the local chartered detachment for the Marine Corp, will meet Tuesday Feb. 25 at the old Cochise County Complex (Foothills and Highway 92) at 7 p.m. Induction ceremony for 2014 officers will occur at this meeting. The internationally acclaimed King's Heralds quartet is coming to Sierra Vista. Glenn Minth will present 'The 1887 Sonoran Earthquake,' on Thursday, Feb. 27. The first half of the class examines earthquake nomenclature, how seismic waves travel, damage scales, and looks at historic samples before considering Arizona's earthquake risk. Then we will consider the 1887 earthquake. Minuth will review the historic damage pictures and narrative accounts from those who recorded their thoughts at the time form over 200 Arizona locations and nearby states and Mexico. The deadline to enter the writing contest for the annual Cochise Community Creative Writing Celebration is Feb. 28. Writers who register for the Celebration, to be held at the end of March, can enter the writing contest in three categories: poetry, short story and creative nonfiction. Authors may submit multiple entires for a $5 fee per entry. Entries are judged by the presenters who lead the Celebration's workshops: authors Ann Garvin and Erec Toso, publishers from Torrey House Press and poet James Jay. Writing contest winners are announced at the Celebration on March 28-29 and their work is published in Mirage Literary and Arts Magazine, produced by Cochise College. The Patterson Observatory and the Huachuca Astronomy Club invite you to visit the observatory and view the night sky with the 20-inch and other telescopes on Thursday, March 6, at about 7 p.m., weather permitting. Highlights will be Jupiter and its largest moons and the environs of Orion. This event is free but donations to the University South Foundation, which owns the telescope, will be gratefully accepted. The observatory is located on the campus of the University of Arizona Sierra Vista, 1140 N. Colombo Drive, just east of Cochise College.


Glenn Minth will present 'The Trail of Pancho Villa - the Columbus New Mexico Raid,' on Friday and Saturday, March 7 and 8. Pancho Villa, the Mexican bandit who turned guerrillero and social reformer said wryly that if it wasn't for the Texans, he would have planted the Mexican flag on the White House. His Columbus, N.M., raid in 1916 killed nearly a score of citizens and torched part of the town. Join Minuth as he covers the historical evolution of the raid via exploration of the museum in the only park in this country named for a terrorist. We journey to Columbus New Mexico where to visit reminders of this event. 6th Annual Fashion Show and Light Lunch will be held at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 3225 St. Andrews Drive (St Andrews Drive at Buffalo Soldier Drive), on Saturday, March 8, from noon to 3:30 p.m. with doors opening at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $15 per person. Mustang Mountain Cowboy Church will be having a ground-breaking ceremony for its new, future location on Saturday, March 8, at 11:30 a.m., on Oak Street, just west of Highway 90 in Whetstone. This will be a barbecue and potluck, so please bring a dish to share. Oh, and, horses are welcome!


The Sierra Vista Community Band will perform its winter concert at 2 p.m., March 9, at the Ethel Berger Center, featuring Ben Marquardt, a graduate student at Arizona State University, performing 'Rhapsody for Euphonium' by James Curnow, as well as a wide array of concert band favorites. The Sierra Vista Area Winter Visitors program will host a presentation on 'Cowboy Poetry,' on Wednesday, March 12, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2145 S. Coronado Drive. The program begins with donuts and coffee at 8:30 a.m., with the program scheduled to run from 9-10 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event. Glenn Minth will present Living in Extremis, the ancient Bristle Cone Forests, on Thursday, March 20. The bristlecone pines exist as a small group of pine trees that are thought to reach an age far greater than that of any other single living organism known, approaching 5,000 years. Minuth will unravel how these trees survive in the harshest of climates. Glenn Minth will present 'Megafauna and Clovis Culture in the San Pedro Valley,' on Saturday, March 29. This half-day lecture and field trip will examine the importance of the Plio-Pleistocene geologic time boundary as it applies to the fossils of these great land mammals in the San Pedro Valley as well as the subsequent occupation of the area by Clovis hunters. The lecture will precede field trip to Murray Springs Clovis Site where we will walk the actual site and learn what Clovis Culture means in field context of what is arguably Cochise County's most famous archeological site.
