The MODA spring fashion show had humble beginnings in 2003, when a group of University of Chicago students showcased the creations of aspiring designers in a school library.
This year, nearly 1,000 fashion enthusiasts are expected to gather Friday in the Great Hall of Union Station to celebrate the creations of 21 designers.
Following is an edited conversation with MODA director and University of Chicago student Lauren Kelly-Jones, 22.
Q: Has social media helped this event evolve?
A: It's changed a lot. It's helped us get funding and support. There are photographs that we took to promote the event. ... We've been using those pictures to promote (MODA) in social media through shares and Instagram and our Facebook page. It's incredible.
Q: What can people expect at the event?
A: DJ Rock City will be the DJ. He's big in Chicago. Union Station will be completely lit up and decorated. There will be appetizers and drinks and people can talk to the designers. The second half is the actual fashion show, and we will be using the benches from Union Station as the seats, which is really cool. The catwalk is going to be taking up half of the (space). ... All the models are students.
Q: Are all the participating designers from the University of Chicago?
A: We have designers from our school, and there are also designers from other schools. There was a student designer named Shelby Steiner who showed her designs a couple of years ago. She was at Columbia College at the time. Now she's a part of Macy's fashion incubator in Chicago. ... Now she's pretty well known, so that (is) exciting.
