New York Fashion Week Fall 2014 Ralph Lauren, J. Mendel, Jason Wu and Calvin Klein.
That's a wrap.
It's as though Ralph Lauren got the memo, as he opened his namesake show on fashion week's closing day with several looks that featured wrap-front coats. But first, this designer debuted his Polo collection for women. The Polo looks were young and kicky -swingy leather miniskirts paired with day-glo jackets and cardigans, to tweed and floral combos, to looks combining pinstripes and plaid.
The Ralph Lauren Collection, however, was long and languid, with looks borrowed from old Hollywood. It was meant to be 'Modern Glamour,' with pretty beaded dresses, oversized sweaters with satin skirts and buttoned up ensembles combining fur, tweeds and post satins.
Calvin Klein's Francisco Costa showed an interestingly homespun collection at Spring Studios on the last day of fashion week. Usually so sleek and modern, this collection was textural with nubby knits and tweed wools put together in simple looks. The best details in this collection were the 'buttons' made of safety pins with clear glass baubles attached, and the clear glass chain link belts.
Using fur and skins as his medium, J. Mendel's Gilles Mendel treats them as fabric, manipulating them through quilting, knitting, hand-piecing and even bonding. The resulting looks are impossibly luxe-who wouldn't want a cardigan knitted of mink? This season's inspiration of the Ballets Russes resulted in an over-the-top posh feel, combining as many luxe elements as possible.
5 TRENDS FOR FALL
With New York's fashion week coming to a close, trends are emerging for what you will want this fall. We've boiled down the top five take-aways:
POSH PELTS
Fur is flying everywhere from all-over fluffies and closely trimmed jackets, to trim for collars and cuffs. Can't full-on commit? Choose a sweet little fur purse, muff or posh hat.
BLUE BELLES
Sapphire-a purple-y blue-is an electric hue that looks good on everyone. Add a touch for a dash of color or go head-to-toe for a grape look.
BI-LEVEL
Let your hems down for fall. Asymmetrical hemlines on dresses and skirts work for everyone-you get to show a little leg while still being covered.
SUIT UP
The go-to dress is going, going, gone. In its place are pants suits that range from traditional trousers and jackets to match-y tops and pants.
A CAPER
They can be tailored, attached to a dress for a sleek look or simply flower-child cool, but capes are a must-have for fall.
