With fall approaching, most of us are thinking about our fall wardrobe. But the fashion industry is way ahead of us, focusing on next spring and summer, with the start of Milan's Fashion Week. This busy city is Italy's style capital year-round, so there are no shortage of chic places to visit during this fashion-packed week. Here are some go-to hot spots:

Traditionally, the fashion editors' hotel of choice has always been the lavish Principe di Savoia in the Piazza della Repubblica. It is undeniably elegant, and the bar is always bustling during Fashion Week. Still, many opt for more centrally located, newer properties such as The Park Hyatt and The Four Seasons, on cozy Via Gesù, in the center of Milan's swankiest shopping area. One of Italian fashion's most iconic names, Giorgio Armani, has a hotel that bears his name, with a design that is as comfortably sleek and refined as his clothing. The hotel from the quirky fashion brand Moschino also parallels its garments - Maison Moschino is designed to be clever, with tongue-and-cheek designs, such as lamps that look like dressmakers' mannequins.

Italy is, of course, the land of pasta and pizza, two foods many fashionistas shy away from. During Fashion Week, they have even less time to eat because of an overly full schedule of shows to attend. Many opt instead for takeout from Peck, a massive, fabulously old-school high-end food store (think Dean & DeLuca's posh Italian aunt) with both prepared dishes and grocery items. For sit-down meals, Giacomo has been a favorite of the style crowd for years with its authentic Tuscan dishes and charming staff that makes every diner feel like a VIP. Another favorite is Alla Cucina delle Langhe, which is packed with designers during Fashion Week and throughout the year as well. Although delicious, its Ligurian food is admittedly on the hearty side. Another spot to see designers year-round: the H Club at the Sheraton Diana Majestic for drinks and light bites and also for breakfast.

For most editors, there is one name in Milan that's synonymous with cutting-edge fashion that's worth traveling for: Il Corso Como, a refreshingly unintimidating tastemaker boutique that carries brands such as Alexander McQueen and Maison Martin Margiela. For something more traditional, there's the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a magnificent arcade that includes Prada among its many shops. Built in the 19th century, it is essentially a precursor of modern shopping malls, and it's still vibrant. The fashion crowd does go there, but many also take a quick detour to Il Salvagente, an outlet store that sells pieces by many of the same designers but at a deep discount. The most devoted bargain hunters sneak away from Fashion Week, or stay in Italy a little longer, to spend the day at the Seravalle outlet, which includes Italian mainstays Gucci and Ferragamo. It's a bit of a hike, easiest by either a twice-daily shuttle bus from Milan or an hourlong train ride, but for many style lovers, it is indeed worth the schlep in the interest of fashion.
