TV Ratings: 'Black

Premiere week continued on Wednesday, where Black-ish became the umpteenth series ABC has tried to partner with Modern Family by premiering in the coveted 9:30 p.m. slot. Did it work? It certainly looks that way. The first episode of Black-ish drew a 3.3 rating with adults 18-49 and 10.8 million viewers in live-plus-same day figures - retaining most of its Modern Family lead-in. That certainly bests all recent attempts at comedy in that time slot.

As for the Emmy darling, season six opened with the broadcast's best showing of the night in the key demo. Albeit down half of a ratings point from last season, Modern Family averaged a 3.7 rating with adults 18-49 and nearly 11 million viewers. Another big question for ABC was how The Goldbergs would transition over from Tuesday. The network hyped the Wednesday move throughout the summer. First time at bat, the '80s-set comedy pulled 2.3 rating among adults under 50. That's an improvement from its Middle lead-in (2.1 adults).

ABC also had Nashville at 10 p.m. The third season of the country music soap pulled a 1.5 rating with adults 18-49, a 25 percent drop from the comparable episode last year. (Nashville has always been a solid DVR performer.)

The Mysteries of Laura didn't intrigue as many young viewers without a lead-in from America's Got Talent. After last week's solid sampling, the Debra Messing starrer moved into its official 8 p.m. slot on NBC and opened the night with an average 1.5 rating among adults 18-49 and 9.9 million viewers. That's a hit from the 2.0-rated premiere, but on par with its viewership. Both Law & Order: SVU and Chicago P.D. fared better in returns to their previous time slots, averaging a respective 2.1 and 1.9 rating in the key demo.

And Fox had the second episode of Red Band Society. The series - which encored Friday to a 87 percent new audience - was three-tenths of a point off from last week's soft premiere with an average 1.0 rating in the key demo (time-shifting predictions forthcoming.)

CBS had a block of reality with the premiere of Survivor, a premiere best compared to the last two years with a 2.7 rating with adults 18-49. The finale of Big Brother pulled a 2.6 rating in the demo, up a shade from last year's ender.
