NSW dog auction draws a crowd

A top price of $3,600 was paid for a kelpie at the annual Dundee Working Dog auction on Friday.

Motley's Jacob, a 2 year old male bred in Armidale, was one of 25 dogs up for sale at the event which attracted buyers and sellers from as far away as Western Australia.

Auctioneer Shad Bailey says it's the only sale of its kind in northern New South Wales, and is a good day out.

'One puppy ran out of the ring and wanted to chase other sheep. It was a bit of excitement and made the crowd happy.'

Dundee farmer Peter Hogan had a couple of dogs for sale. He says his kelpies can't be taught to be good working dogs.

'You can't teach a dog to work sheep. All you can do is work with him.

'They're better bred than normal farm dogs. He's been born with the right genetics to work sheep.

'We find that some of our pups teach their handlers a thing or two about how to work stock.'
