Soweto Fashion Week takes another shot at design dazzle

DESPITE a rocky start in their first attempt this year, organisers of the upcoming Soweto Fashion Week (SFW) say they're ready to host a better event this month.

'Our main goal is to promote youth development by giving young designers the opportunity to nurture the business side of their fashion,' says organiser Jackie Phamotse.

The show will feature 12 young designers who will showcase various fashion genres, from modern contemporary to traditional African creations and streetwear.

The winter SFW, which took place in May, had a disappointing turnout and one of the reasons for that was believed to be the last-minute change of venue from Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown to the cultural village in the same area. Organisers said that was because some sponsors had pulled out.

Still without help from sponsors, Phamotse says she remains optimistic because of collaborative efforts between various community stakeholders to get this show on the road.

The fashion extravaganza is set for three days - one more than in May - because 'a lot more designers are keen to take part in the show because of the networking and marketing opportunities', Phamotse says.

She says the last SFW opened doors for many of their designers.

'Two designers, namely Tebogo from Immigrant Designs and Collen from Fresh Wear, were chosen to attend the Young Designers Forum conference in Los Angeles.

'Two more received scholarships at Spero Villioti design school, while one designer won another scholarship from Vega.'

Apart from showcasing fresh designs on the ramp, the event will have pop-up stores that will give fashion fundis the chance to purchase garments that catch their fancy.

There will also be car shows for motor enthusiasts.

'We are hoping to attract at least 300 people per day, which would be double the number of people who came to the first SFW,' says Phamotse.

The event takes place from November 21 to 23 at Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown.

Tickets at Computicket for R50 per day.
