Diane von Furstenberg Hits Tokyo Fashion Week

DVF OUT EAST: Diane von Furstenberg made her first trip to Tokyo in five years to stage a runway reprisal of her fall collection as one of Tokyo Fashion Week's marquee events. Ai Tominaga opened Thursday's show, which culminated in a finale of gold gowns and confetti. The designer, battling a severe case of jet lag and concealing its effects with dark sunglasses during interviews before the show, said she was exhausted by the trip and from speaking about one subject in particular. 'I have done nothing but talk about myself the entire time. So it's not been very inspiring,' she said. Von Furstenberg said she had been so busy with store visits and other official business that she hadn't had time to check out the local talents and she was stumped for an answer when a Japanese journalist asked her why Japan hadn't produced any big names recently. 'Well, they had a good run for a while,' she said, alluding to the Eighties heydays of Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons. Meanwhile, von Furstenberg is continuing to reflect on her legacy as her company celebrates the 40th anniversary of her iconic wrap dress. 'For the first time ever, I guess I'm actually impressed by it 40 years later,' she said. 'The incredible thing about aging is that you have a past and you have a body of work, and this is what has happened to me.'
