New York Fashion Week officially kicked off Thursday with all the usual pomp and circumstance, from celebrity selfies at BCBGMAXAZRIA to a very happy-- and colorful-- Adriana Lima blowing kisses on the runway at Desigual. Here are five highlights from the dawn to dusk style happenings.
Tadashi Shoji goes to Venice
How would designer Tadashi Shoji describe his spring 2015 collection-- filled with romantic lace and tulle, regal golds and deep blues, long gowns and dramatic capes-- in just one word? 'Venice,' he says without a moment's hesitation.
Shoji's inspiration was obvious as soon as guests stepped into the Salon at Lincoln Center and faced a Venetian scene projected onto the runway's backdrop. It was the Italian city's Gothic architecture, and especially the Ca' d'Oro, a palace along the Grand Canal, that Shoji says caught his eye.
But while a city filled with history brought his collection to life, Shoji said he hoped women would feel youthful, feminine and self-confident in his decadent creations.

Adriana Lima's energy is infectious everywhere she goes, but the supermodel lit up an already colorful Desigual runway Thursday afternoon, blowing kisses in a flower headband and showing off her dance moves alongside models carrying cheeky signs with phrases such as 'Happy to be here,' and 'Looking for a boyfriend,' while actress Rosario Dawson, model Poppy Delevingne and NYC style star Olivia Palermo looked on.
The upbeat, feel-good show promoted Desigual's 'Say something nice' collection, described as 'happy casual,' incorporating fresh blooms in collaboration with French designer Christian Lacroix. Models took turns throwing petals in the air during the grand finale.

A light, ultra-feminine, and down-right ethereal BCBGMAXAZRIA spring 2015 collection practically floated down the runway on opening morning, as actress Jamie Chung and 'Pretty Little Liars' star Shay Mitchell sat front row.
Chung, who couldn't resist taking a selfie with a pal ('America's Next Top Model's' Jay Manuel and celebrity stylist June Ambrose were spotted doing the same), had fun shaking her fringe top for the cameras.

The fashion elite can't get enough of Creatures of the Wind's effortlessly cool style, and designers Christopher Peters and Shane Gabier just got even cooler in our book.
The pair debuted their first in-house shoe collection during their spring 2015 Fashion Week show, and while they did have platforms and chunky heels (yes, the '90s are still having a moment), they emphasized one thing: comfort.
'We only want to make shoes for regular people,' Peters told the Associated Press. And as regular people with achy feet after only day one... we applaud him.
