Ask any editor or designer visiting New York for fashion week tips and you'll likely hear about the 'only' hotel they'll ever stay at, the 'only' Sunday brunch they eat every season and the 'one' coffee shop that makes their double iced Americano just so. And L.A.-based Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy are no different, traveling from their Pasadena hometown to New York twice each year to show their latest collections. Their longtime hotel of choice? The posh Mandarin Oriental at Columbus Circle, which they've just partnered with on a groovy in-room map featuring their favorite places to eat, drink, sleep and spend when they have downtime in New York (yeah, because designers have so much of that during fashion week. But no matter.).
'This is actually really personal,' Kate told Pret-a-Reporter during an intimate celebratory cocktail party held at the hotel's Edison bulb-clad M'O Bar on Thursday night. 'These really are all of our places. We have our routine.'
Part of that routine includes The Smile, where the girls have a traditional day-after-show brunch with friends, Opening Ceremony, the hipper-than-thou boutique owned by UC Berkeley classmates Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, and Dashwood Books, which they call 'the best bookstore in NYC.' Each of these places - and a bevy of others - appear as points on a simple yet graphically bold Manhattan map created by artist Aerosyn-Lex Mestrovic, who has worked with Kanye West and Jeff Koons (this editor may or may not be framing hers for use in her California home).
As for the best part about their Lincoln Center-proximate home base, Laura says she never misses an opportunity to soak in the Mandarin's pool.
'The view from it is amazing - you see everything,' the designer said while gesturing toward the bar's expansive windows overlooking both the city and Central Park. 'This is where we come to decompress.'
