With only a week until the La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn.'s entry rolls down Colorado Boulevard, volunteers are getting ready to decorate the float.
'Dog Gone!' will use 2,800 carnations, 40,100 camellia leaves, 700 pounds of kidney beans, and thousands of roses in shades from lavender to yellow.
Real oranges and lemons will be attached to man-made trees. The entry marks the association's 36th float in the parade and depicts a scene of a dogcatcher chasing after a group of dogs who have stolen his truck.But before volunteers get to work attaching all the live plants and fruit, residents will have one last chance to see the bare float.
'It's a chance for everyone to see what the float looks like before it starts to get heavily decorated,' said Chuck Hughes, a member of the association.
Today marks the association's annual 'Under the Bridge' party in a parking lot at Flintridge Preparatory School, where merchandise will be sold and donors will be honored. Another donor party will be held on Sunday.
Today's event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. The association will sell merchandise at its 'Floatique' from Dec. 26 through Jan. 31. Some of the items for sale include T-shirts with a graphic of the 2014 float, plush dogs, collector pins, sweatshirts, and coffee mugs.
Volunteers will begin decorating the float with flowers on Saturday, and they plan to adhere the fruit early next week. Float judging starts on Dec. 30.
Jennifer O'Connor, decorator chair for the float, has worked on 14 floats, including the current one. She said decorating the float and prepping it for the parade is a great experience. She also said the volunteers and support of the community make the annual tradition possible.
'It's always a good time to get to know other people in the community,' added O'Connor. 'It's a lot of fun.'
