The best and worst fashion in 2013

Beyonce was the queen of the costume change during 'The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour.'

The fashion world had some unforgettable firsts in 2013. A step team replaced runway models during Paris Fashion Week, a supermodel/TV host actually tried to look much older than she is, and Jennifer Lawrence 's haute couture dress nearly killed her en route to pick up her Best Actress Oscar.

This year also saw lots of disasters - likeLady Gaga sporting a bad grill and Miley Cyrus trying to twerk her way out of a leotard. It became almost impossible to scroll through Twitter without spotting celebrities exposing side butt or side boob on the red carpet. And we didn't need another season of belly-baring tops.

Here are the year's best and worst moments in fashion.

------------

BEST

Beyoncé's 'Mrs. Carter Show World Tour'

If anyone knows how to master a costume change - or eight - it's Beyoncé. Peter Dundas of Emilio Pucci designed five of her many sparkly looks, and they were all Queen Bey-worthy.

Heidi Klum's Halloween costume

Finally, someone turned the whole 'Sexy Halloween Costume' on its head. Heidi Klum's old, wrinkly woman getup made the supermodel unrecognizable - in a great way.

Isabel Marant x H&M

Designer Marant did budget-conscious shoppers a huge favor when she translated her boho chic runway looks into thrillingly similar pieces for her line with H&M.

Rick Owens' Spring/Summer 2014 Runway Show

The designer replaced standard catwalk models with four American step teams, including New York-based Momentum. The high-energy dances combined with seeing the clothes on real women practically blew up the Internet.

Jennifer Lawrence's Oscar Dress

Not only did she kill it in her Dior Couture ball gown at the 2013 Academy Awards, but she proved she's no Gwyneth Paltrow by falling up the stage stairs en route to collecting her Best Actress Oscar.

Princess Taylor

Taylor Swift typically wears super-short dresses and shorts for public appearances, but at the Winter Whites Gala at Kensington Palace in London this month, the 'Red' singer looked just as regal as the royals in a crystal-covered Reem Acra gown.

Kerry Washington

For most of the year, the 'Scandal' star could do no wrong on every red carpet she walked. From beaded Miu Miu at the Golden Globes to her white goddess dress at the SAG Awards, everything Washington touched was gold.

Rita Ora

It didn't take long for British singer Rita Ora to catch the eye of big names in fashion. Her Old Hollywood glamour on red carpets and edgy street style snagged the 23-year-old campaigns for DKNY and Madonna's Material Girl line.

Best Dressed Baby

Maybe it's not healthy to be jealous of a baby's wardrobe, but Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's daughter North already has full ensembles from Givenchy, Chloe, Alexander Wang and Lanvin.

----

WORST

Lady Gaga

Gaga outdid herself in the outrageousness department with her tasteless costumes to promote her album 'Artpop.'

Miley Cyrus

Thanks for the memories, Miley, but we really didn't need a close-up inspection of your bikini waxer's work.

Side Butt

We already knew that Gwyneth Paltrow had a perfect butt, because her celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson has told everyone willing to listen. But the Goop dynamo insisted we see for ourselves.

Side Boob

Also known as underboob. Stars like Michelle Dockery fell in love with dresses that showed off their chest from a brand-new angle.

Belly-Baring Trend

Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger and others insist on continuing this unflattering trend into spring 2014, but we'd prefer to leave our crop tops in the '90s where they belong.

Kim Kardashian at the Met

Kardashian's maternity wear left a lot to be desired, but her decision to wear floral Givenchy wallpaper for her first appearance at the Costume Institute Gala made her look even less likely to appear on a Vogue cover anytime soon.

Julianne Hough's Halloween Costume

How many times do celebrities need to hear it? Black face paint: never okay.

Lena Dunham

The ultimate cool 'Girl' still can't figure out how to dress. Either she chooses an unflattering print (like her Prada gown at the Emmys) or unflattering shape (her black Theory by Olivier Theyskens dress at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards).

Kanye West's Confederate Flag

After wearing the flag on his jacket in November, West told a radio station, 'I took the Confederate flag and made it my flag. It's my flag now. Now what you gonna do?' Good question! We're going to dislike you, that's what we're going to do.

Best and Worst: Sheer Trend

Going sheer on the red carpet was hit-or-miss this year, as the CFDA Awards at Lincoln Center proved. There, Adriana Lima wore a glamorous, sheer Givenchy gown that revealed her stunning stems, while 'Girls' star Jemima Kirke tried - and failed - to make a sheer black dress work.
