L.A.'s Fashion Week is the one for upstarts

Fashion Week is underway in Los Angeles. That's right: At the tail end of fashion-week season, after the celebs, press and buyers have packed their bags and returned from New York, London, Milan and Paris, Southern California takes a turn on the catwalk with 11 days of runway shows, presentations and installations previewing designers' spring and summer 2015 collections throughout the city.

The timing makes it hard for events to draw buyers, Kelsi Smith, founder and director of Los Angeles Fashion Council, told me at a preview of her organization's show Tuesday night.

'We're on the butt end of the calendar, so by the time they've done the whole fashion month, coming to another one is a bit hard,' she said.

But L.A. Fashion Council uses the timing to its advantage, focusing its two-day event on emerging Los Angeles designers 'because they need the most support,' she said. 'Our goal with L.A. Fashion Council is to make L.A. the place to come to find the next big thing.

'New York has their corporate, their commercial. They have that down. But then there's no space on their calendar for an emerging designer to really be discovered, so we really want to become that place of discovery for L.A. designers.'

Los Angeles Fashion Council's lineup on Wednesday and Thursday at Maker City LA downtown includes its Open Runway winner Sania Josiah and runner-up L'Enfant Terrible, as well as Odylyne, Sauri, Stella Proseyn, William Bradley, Colton Dane, Linden, Rochelle Carino and That's Totally Fine by Rose La Grua-'just some innovative, really fun emerging designers,' Smith said.
