Shanghai Fashion Week is in full swing. Its catwalk is set in the scenic New World Taiping Lake Garden, and more than half of the 50 shows are being staged by local designers. Ji Cheng is a Shanghai-based fashion designer, who is inspired by bamboo. With long, thin lines, and high waists, her spring/summer collection brought some grace to the Shanghai catwalk. The natural fabric is combined with thin pleats, and a lot of exquisite handiwork. Shiny translucent materials contrast with natural linen, and the many different shades of green recall a misty bamboo forest. Modern cuts inspired by Chinese nature, creating cool urban outfits.

'Nowadays, designers are using Chinese elements to achieve a very unique feel. I use a lot of light-reflecting materials, and even embroider them. I think the big challenge for today's designers is sourcing materials that aren't normally used,' Ji said. There are more than 50 shows, and 32 are by local designers.
