Could a Men's Fashion Week Be Coming to New York?

For years, menswear designers have had to share the New York Fashion Week limelight with—and arguably be a bit upstaged by—women's lines. (Many designers, including Calvin Klein, Thom Browne, and 3.1 Phillip Lim, have moved their menswear shows to Europe specifically because of this.) But this could be ending soon—as soon as next July even, according to the New York Times, who reports that support for a separate men's fashion week is gaining serious momentum.

As the Times details, the CFDA has thrown around the idea of a New York men's fashion week for a while, but now they've got a date in place for when they want it to start, July 2015, and they're taking the steps to make it happen. In October, they e-mailed American menswear designers to check for interest in the July 2015 kickoff, and they've recently been lining up the necessary sponsors.

Of course, that timing is not without its challenges, like: 1) attracting a strong enough designer lineup to get foreign press and buyers to the city and 2) raising enough sponsorship money to be feasible (one budget predicts a cool $2 million is needed to stage the event.) The budget in particular would need to be covered by early next year for a week to happen in the summer. But 'tis the season for giving, and wouldn't the event, with its promise of gorgeous, well-dressed men on the runway and the New York streets, be a wonderful gift to us all?

(Yes. Yes, it would.)
