67 Dogs rescued from home

(2/2)

PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - A Tuesday raid on a residence in Putnam County revealed around 60 dogs living in deplorable living conditions. All the dogs were removed from the home, but as they recover from neglect, a group of rescue centers are doing their best to nurse them back to health.

Dozens of dachshunds huddled together in warm beds and blankets at the For Paws Sake Canine Rescue.

'We did receive a call yesterday morning from the Putnam County Sheriff's Department and asked for assistance in a raid on a puppy mill situation,' Sheryl Shaver of the center explained. What was inside the home? Close to 70 dogs of different breeds. According to police the puppy mill was used to breed dogs on a large scale for sale; in this case, at the cost of the dogs' health.

'There was no water,' Shaver said. 'We don't know how long the animals had been without water.' That's where For Paws Sake comes in. On Tuesday, they were giving the dog's essential care they had lacked. Wednesday, they began cataloging the dogs and their conditions for sheriff's department.

It's all part of finding a normal life for these dogs future. But, it comes with a steep price.

'When you are looking at 67 puppies and assuming you know, even with no surgeries, (it'll be) $200-500 per puppy,' Shaver said.

'You know it's gonna cost thousands of dollars to get these animals taken care of, get them veterinary care and the help that they need.' If you'd like to help with the cause click here
