MILAN - Milan Community Education will host its fourth annual Art, Craft, Gift, Bake and Valentine's Day Sale Feb.8 at the Milan Middle School.

Debbie Dowd, a professional photographer from Milan and previous event organizer, said this year's sale would be bigger and better. The proceeds from the sale could be a life-changer for a student enrolled in the adult education program.

Milan Community Education Coordinator Connie Cox said profits from previous year's shows totaled $5,000. Those funds were invested and established the Milan Adult Education Scholarship Fund.

Cox said because the money was invested they need to continue to raise money with this year's proceeds providing a college scholarship for a 2014 graduate. Cox said the scholarship will be presented May 20 at the Milan Adult Education graduation ceremony.

'This is an exciting event and I am grateful to Dowd who is donating her time and effort,' Cox said, 'It's been my sincere desire, before I leave this program, that a fund be in place for my students' future.'

Cox has successfully served as coordinator for 25 years and has brought excellence to the community education program offering more classes, to include cheerleading, snorkeling, diving, nutrition classes and more.

She was recently recognized for her outstanding leadership, initiative and integrity in the field by the Milan Board of Education when she received the Michigan Association of Community and Adult Education, 2013 Director of the Year Award.

Further, she oversees the only high school completion program in a federal prison in the entire state of Michigan, and under her guidance, Milan has received an award for being one of only seven districts in the state to meet performance measures.

This fundraiser has been well supported by the community and Cox said this year the sale would feature more than 70 vendors offering a wide variety of products and services to include everything from home repair to fresh flowers. Vendors selling brand name products include Tupperware, Pampered Chef, Scentsy, Insta Heat Packs, Tastefully Simple Food, Origami Owl Jewelry, Rue 31 and Miche.

More than 70 items donated by vendors will be raffled off and throughout the day other raffles made up of donated items from area businesses featuring Milan Ace Hardware, Basil Boys, Marcos Pizza, McDonald's, Big Boy, Fiesta Salon and flowers from Kroger will take place. Continued...

Light lunch items such as Sloppy Joes, hot dogs, chips, cookies, pop, water and coffee will be available. A disc jockey will play light music and make announcements.

Dowd said space is still available for vendors. Eight-foot spaces rent for $20 or $25 with a furnished table. An eight-foot space with table and electricity rents for $30. Also, volunteers for table set up on Friday night and helping vendors with loading, unloading and take down after the show on Saturday are needed.

'Looking forward to another successful event,' Cox said. 'The proceeds from this fundraiser really can be life changing.'

The sale will be held at the Milan Middle School located at 920 North St on Feb. 8. Admission is free and the show will run from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m.
