Spring Fashion Trends from Blue Star Bazaar

Details Published on Tuesday, 21 January 2014 10:18 Written by Megan LaBant Abrahamsen

Here are six style trends for spring that ANYONE call pull off. If you are a fashion risk-taker, go bold. Get yourself an ikat maxi dress and wear it with confidence. If you are more the type to color inside the lines of fashion, dabble with these trends by adding a new piece of jewelry, scarf, or bag. It's all about finding a way to freshen your wardrobe in a way that makes YOU feel great.

1. Global prints and patterns. Imagine you took a fabulous vacation to Africa or India and brought back beautiful fabrics to add to your wardrobe. Ikat patterns, embroidery, batik prints. There seem to be elephant patterns popping up on just about anything: purses, tunics, scarves, and more.

2. Shades of white. I hesitate to say '50 Shades of White.' A monochromatic mix of white, gray, and ivory looks fresh and sophisticated this spring. You can dabble in the trend with white jewelry or accessories. You can dive in head-to-toe by combining an ivory sweater with white jeans. The trick is to keep the fabrics seasonally appropriate - the lightest cotton and linen is for summer only.

3. Radiant orchid. Pantone has named 'radiant orchid' its color of the year for 2014. I admit that this is a tough one to wear top to bottom without looking like a 20th Century bridesmaid. Try a scarf, cuff bracelet, or clutch purse to show you're on-trend without being a fashion victim.

4. The white oxford shirt. I don't think this staple could ever really go out of style but it is especially 'in' this season. If your white shirt is more limp than crisp and more off than white, it's time for a replacement. Lands End and Brooks Brothers offer no-wrinkle versions making this item possibly THE most practical item in your closet.

5. Metallic prints and fabrics. Shades of silver and gold are showing up as both the lead and supporting colors in apparel this spring. Find a scarf with lurex stripes woven in, a jersey wrap dress in silver knit, or a casual blouse with a gold print or embroidery.

6. Nautical inspiration. This is a classic style that suits the likes of Kate - the Duchess of Cambridge. Elements include navy and white (and occasionally red), stripes, anchors, pea coats, gold accents, and simple silhouettes. If you're going to go for an anchor (on your sweater, jewelry, or bag) limit yourself to just ONE - unless, possibly, you work for a cruise line.
