More cars and canines

Another show tomorrow benefiting dogs - and beer and old cars will be the OverDrive Hot Rod News Mini Swap Meet & Car Show, from

6 a.m.-noon at the Manzanita Brewing Co., 10151 Prospect Ave., Santee. Swap spaces $10 each; setup at 6 a.m. The car show is open to all makes and models, $10, and it is free to shop and view. Cajon Classic Cruise

Next Wednesday's season opener (April 23) for the Cajon Classic Cruise will feature a full street closure from 5-8 p.m. in downtown El Cajon, along Main Street and Magnolia Avenue. This is an enjoyable show that will have a couple hundred cars along the sides and

down the middle of the main drag. There will be music, plenty of showmanship by organizer Charger Steve of the East County Cruisers and good restaurants with sidewalk or patio dining, including Nicolosi's, Marieta's and the Downtown Café. Theme nights will include El Camino versus Ranchero (April 30), Salute to the Military (June 4) and T Buckets Galore (Aug. 20). New themes will include Snake and Mongoose (May 14), Fast and Furious (May 28) and Tribute to Jimmie Johnson (July 23). Info: CajonClassicCruise.org.

Bumper crop

The Goodguys Del Mar Nats was packed on Saturday, April 5, when I made the rounds. The cruise lane was so filled with show-goers on both sides that the cruisers had to weave among the foot traffic. All areas of the hot-rod fest seemed to be flush with cars, vendors and auto-crossers. The for-sale corral had interesting variety, but most seemed valued at top-of-retail prices, which still comes down to 'best offer.' And the variety in the swap meet was better than it has been in a couple of seasons.

Goodguys PR boss John Drummond checked in with these stats:

Car count: 2,038 cars - right about where it was last year.

Crowd: three-day attendance of 59,600 was up slightly from last year.

'There's no fall show this year, which has us thinking that next spring's numbers will spike substantially,' Drummond said. 'The fans and car guys were just here in November so there's a little carryover effect. When its 365 days till the next Goodguys Del Mar - people should be hungry for another great show!'
