Oscar de la Renta, Prabal Gurung to Show at Singapore Fashion Week

The main fashion week events in New York, London, Milan and Paris might have ended in March, but that doesn't mean it isn't fashion week somewhere.

In less than a month, Singapore Fashion Week, which is also known as the Audi Fashion Festival, will kick off. And this season, two major American fashion designers will open and close the event.

According to Fashionista, Prabal Gurung will open Singapore Fashion Week, which kicks off on May 14, and Oscar de la Renta will close it. Kate Bosworth, an ambassador for Japanese skincare brand SK-II, will also be in attendance.

In addition to these more established talents, Singapore Fashion Week will also feature a slew of local designers and labels.

Unlike at New York Fashion Week, de la Renta and Gurung will have the opportunity to engage directly with customers because tickets are available for purchase by the public.

'Even if you went to London, New York, Paris or Milan for fashion week, you wouldn't get to attend the shows,' Singapore Fashion Week's founder, Tjin Lee, told Fashionista last year.

'We bring them here and give consumers a chance.'

Since its inception in 2009, a slew of other big-name designers and labels have presented their wares at Singapore Fashion Week. Some of these key fashion figures include Christian Lacroix, Vivienne Westwood, Gareth Pugh, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Missoni, Ungaro, Erdem, DSquared2, Roberto Cavalli, Mugler, Zac Posen and Roland Mouret.

Going forward, Lee hopes to get more Asian designers on the show schedule (she's off to a good start with Gurung, who is from Singapore!).

'In the past five years, there's been a lot more interest in international Asian designers. I think a lot of that has to do with the buying power of Asian customers,' she said.

'Alexander Wang, Phillip Lim, Jason Wu: we would love to have those designers out here.'
