On Beauty | Spring Shape


Rare is the gym that can be described as aesthetically pleasing. Yet that's just what the trainer Stephen Cheuk has assembled at S10 Training, his recently opened fitness center in the TriBeCa neighborhood in New York. Designed by Samuel Amoia Associates, which has previously undertaken projects for André Balazs and Ian Schrager, it features mirrored changing-room cubes, brick walls with a lime-wash finish and a prominently placed photograph by Jim Mangan. The stylish look suits Cheuk's roster of clients, which includes the Alexander Wang design team, the actor-slash-designer Waris Ahluwalia and a host of other downtown fashion types. 'It's a visually beautiful gym, which doesn't hurt when you're working out,' notes Ahluwalia, who has trained with Cheuk for years.


Cheuk's attention to detail extends to the workouts he constructs for his clients. 'All the workouts are specific,' explains Sophia Chang, a designer and illustrator who has collaborated with the N.B.A. and Puma and who helped design the sports bras for S10's in-house line of workout wear. 'Stephen is very familiar with human anatomy.' The gym offers one-on-one sessions, semiprivate group classes for four to eight people, yoga and a class designed for runners who want to add more strength training to their workout routine. The prices range from $20 for yoga to $100-150 per hour for the private sessions.



S10 stands for 'sub-10 percent,' the level of body fat that Cheuk encourages male clients to attain. The name reflects the technicality of Cheuk's approach: unlike fitness trainers at chain gyms, he measures his clients' body fat in 12 key locations, then targets those spots with exercises and lifestyle changes. Even the water offered at S10 has been rigorously vetted: because Cheuk believes plastic water bottles contaminate the liquid they hold with toxins that people then store as fat, it runs through an 11-stage filtration process involving reverse osmosis.
