Fashion Ambush: stylish scientist Bertha Hidalgo on Birmingham Fashion Week ...

Birmingham Fashion Week will continue at 7 p.m. tonight with 'Fashion Star' winner Hunter Bell, designers Salence and headlining designer SW3 Bespoke. The models strutting down the runway aren't the only one under the tent with a sense of style. There are plenty of fashionable attendees to see as well. AL.com caught up with blogger and epidemiologist Bertha Hidalgo Thursday night to see what she was wearing.

Who: Bertha Hidalgo

Occupation: I'm a genetic epidemiologist; I have a doctorate in epidemiology from UAB.

What are you wearing: I'm actually wearing a Lotus Boutique dress. They were gracious enough to lend it to me for fashion week. I have a jacket from Zara that I got two years ago that's been just sitting in my closet, a fringe bag from H&M and then Prabal Gurung for Target shoes.

How did you pick out the look: It really started with the dress and I wanted to just add a pop of metallic because the designers that were going to be here are so eccentric, so I wanted something that was going to be fun. The black was just to add a bold color.

How would you describe your personal style: It's professional because I spend most of my time at work. It's very structured blazers, pencil skirts and dresses. For more casual, I tend to lean towards casual chic, if you will.

Why did you start your blog, chicinacademia.com: As a professional, I saw that there was not really a focus on fashion and I wanted to speak to the fact that women can be fashionable and intelligent and they don't have to mutually exclusive. I started the blog to show others in academia how you can dress well and affordably and make it a part of the work environment.
