Spring fashions take a sensible, looser turn

Could it be wishful thinking on our part or has fashion come to its senses this spring? When even models at Chanel saunter down the runway with backpacks (albeit ones that retail for thousands of dollars), we have to surmise that something's up. For one thing, the backpack has made a comeback and just in time to salvage our lower backs and posture. White cotton blouses in various guises, from camp-style to cropped and down to knee-length, have also made a welcome return to the fashion zeitgeist. Dresses and pants have loosened up so constant gym-going is not a necessity. Finally, to go with the now popular midlength hem, sporty sandals and low-heeled shoes will make walking a welcome pursuit and are even more proof that fashion is showing us its practical side.

The backpack

The Robinson Basket-Weave backpack from Tory Burch ($450, at ToryBurch.com), with rattan-like detailing and leather trim says spring, and its functional design features plenty of pockets to stylishly stash your stuff. Chanel's spray-painted backpack, randomly appointed with an assortment of woven ropes and chains, will set you back $3,400. Low-heeled sandals

Pedicure is not optional when you wear Nanette Lepore's Chi Chi leather sandal with rubber sole ($298, Zappos.com). Prada has a line of leather sandals with adjustable straps. A playful sandal with oversized laces is available from 3.1 Phillip Lim ($550).

The white shirt

Relaxed sportswear for spring ruled runways from Tommy Hilfiger, Stella McCartney, Chanel and Burberry. What could be more of a staple than a white shirt? Designers Wes Gordon and Derek Lam sent their models out with layered and tunic-length styles; Rag & Bone paired a polo tee ($295) made from sheer Italian yarns with a black leather skirt.
