The decision to bring the series back comes nearly three months after the bubble show starring Italia Ricci ended its freshman run with an average of 1.17 million total viewers. The series, about a young girl with cancer and based on Televisa's Spanish-language drama, has been a consistent performer for the Disney-owned cabler in its time period. The show, airing Tuesdays at 9 p.m., ranked as cable's top performer in adults 18-34, women 18-34 as well as total viewers 12-34 and women 12-34 in the time period.

Produced by BV Family Productions, Lionsgate, Televisia and ABC Family, exec producers include Sean Smith, Susanna Fogel, Joni Lefkowitz and Aaron Kaplan.

The renewal marks one of Burke's first decisions in her new role at ABC Family. It comes as the network, under president Tom Ascheim, has a renewed focus on targeting young adults rather one that caters to families with kids as it looks to lure more 20-something viewers.

Chasing Life joins a roster of original scripted fare at ABC Family that includes new procedural Stitchers, Baby Daddy, The Fosters, Melissa & Joey, Switched at Birth and Young & Hungry. On the pilot side, the network still has Recovery Road in contention as it prepares to order a new slate of pilots under Burke. The network recently canceled originals Mystery Girls and , which both ran for one season apiece.
