Abused dogs found in Homestead to be put up for adoption

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -

Animals that were abused at a townhouse in Homestead are now receiving the help they need at Miami-Dade Animal Services.

Lazaro Ruiz, 26, is facing multiple charges after police raided his home and found many of the pit bull mixes with injuries. Some even had part of their ears cut off and were being trained how to fight.

The good news is that all of the dogs and the one puppy found are expected to be OK. Animal Services officials told Local 10 News that the puppy is on antibiotics due to an ear infection because of the cropping.

All are expected to be put up for adoption.

Meanwhile, Ruiz is charged with animal cruelty, unlicensed practice of veterinary medicine and unlicensed sale of animals.

According to police, numerous YouTube videos that Ruiz uploaded showed the dogs with their ears clipped and eating raw meat, which caught the attention of animal advocates.

Detectives said they have been investigating this case since January, but hadn't been able to track Ruiz down.

'This individual's ego and his tattoos are really what led to an arrest in this case,' said Kathy Labrada, of Miami-Dade Animal Services. 'Many of the postings on Facebook and YouTube - there was no face, there was no identifying information to link this individual, but his very distinct tattoos on his arms and legs led us to a positive identification.'

Ruiz has been released from jail on bond, but police say he could be facing more charges in the coming days.
