Dog Not Gone products bring peace of mind

Maine company makes blaze-orange pet safety products. Sale doubled this year for Dog Not Gone.

KINGFIELD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- With deer hunters in the field, many people are concerned about the safety of their pets. That has been a windfall to Dog Not Gone, a Maine company which makes blaze-orange products, primarily for dogs.

Bill and Julie Swain are building the business and sales are growing fast. Fifteen years ago, Julie was making fleece clothing in a small shop near Sugarloaf Ski Resort. A friend asked her to make a safety vest for a hunting dog.

The design was a success. After they married, the Swains said, 'It worked once, why wouldn't others want one?' They made their first vest in 2006.

Now they sell vests, collars, kerchiefs and other products for dogs. They also make a vest for horses and one for dog walkers. The products are made of high-quality technical orange.

'There are very few (pet safety products) that are American made,' said Bill Swain. 'There are few made in the caliber quality that we put together. Ours hold up so well almost to a detriment. We can't resell a vest to the same dog for a long time because ours hold up.'

Last year, their manufacturer in Skowhegan was going out of business. The Swains bought their assets and started Maine Stitching Specialties which makes the pet products, as well as draperies for hotels and health care.
