Animal activists support ban on puppy sales in Reno

More than 40 people shouted chants, waved posters and even dressed up in dog costumes to show their support on a city ban, preventing the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in Reno, Sparks and Incline Village stores. Marcella Corona/RGJ

'Hey all you Reno Yuppies, don't get store bought puppies' and 'adopt don't shop' were just a few of the catch phrases local animal activists in Reno shouted during a demonstration promoting pet adoptions.

Organizations such as the VegNV and Puppy Mill-Free Reno/Sparks/Washoe County gathered more than 40 supporters to protest puppy mills and pet sales.

'We think it's time for Reno, Washoe and Sparks to give a voice to those voiceless and pass this ban,' said Billy Howard, founding organizer for Puppy Mill-Free Reno.

The groups had gathered on Neil Road and South Virginia Street, near the Whole Foods Market, to show support for initiating a ban on the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in Reno, Sparks and Incline Village stores.
