Two Charged in Animal Cruelty Case in Greenup County, Ky.

GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Two people are facing charges in an animal cruelty case in Greenup County.

Sheriff Keith Cooper says his office received a tip from an animal rights group who bought two dogs from Craigslist that were neglected and abused.

They said one of the dogs was severely injured.

'One had an old collar put around its neck, and it was so nasty where (its skin) had grown over the top of it,' Cooper said. 'It actually looked like its throat had been cut, it was so deep.'

The Sheriff's Department, Humane Society and Animal Control started investigating and charged Joe and Lois Rhea, of Greenup, with second-degree animal cruelty.

Deputies say four other dogs were found living in inhumane conditions. Those dogs were also for sale on Craigslist.

'It's all about the money with them,' Cooper said. 'They could've cared less. They were just after a quick turnaround.'

The dogs were taken into custody and treated for their injuries. As of Friday morning, deputies tell WSAZ.com the dogs are in good shape.
