High school art showcase: YorkArts@CityArt, 118 W. Philadelphia St., is proud to showcase the artwork of nine York County high schools through May 31. Each high school will be installing the exhibits themselves, as well as organizing the opening receptions, functioning as a learning experience for art students of York County. Grief support: Hospice & Community Care's Pathways Center for Grief & Loss is holding free drop-in support groups at the WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital (Community Room), Apple Hill Health Campus, 55 Monument Road, York Township.
* 'Coping with the Loss of a Companion or Spouse' will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 7, as well as 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 5 and 2 to 3:30 p.m. May 6. No registration needed.
* Bereavement workshop: 'Discovering Your Whispers' will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 14. Led by author Kim Kluxen Meredith, the workshop is designed to help participants discover whispers of God amid the cacophony of grief. To register, call the Pathways Center at 717-391-2413 or 800-924-7610.
* Camp Mend a Heart will be May 31 at Penn Grove Retreat Center near Hanover. This is a one-day camp for grieving families (children 6 to 18 years old and adults). Free seminar on bladder-control relief: Memorial Hospital is holding a seminar for women who want to learn more bladder-control options from 6 to 7 p.m. April 10 at Heritage Hills Conference Center. The pgoram will discuss options for those with overactive bladder, urinary retention, frequent need to urinate and related issues. Registration is required, and seating is limited. Photo contest: Photo submissions are now being accepted for the 11th annual Chesapeake Bay Foundation watershed photo contest. Photographers of all skill levels, ages 13 and older, are encouraged to participate to win cash prizes and to have their photos featured in CBF's award-winning publications like the Save the Bay magazine and membership calendar. The deadline for submissions is April 11. Photos should focus on water, and can illustrate a wide variety of topics like the beauty, benefits, and the recreational value of local rivers and streams. Winners will receive a cash award ranging from the top prize of $500 to $100. The first-prize winner also receives a premium spot in the CBF 2015 calendar. All winners will also receive a one-year membership to CBF and will have their photos displayed on CBF's website, in a CBF e-newsletter, in CBF's 2015 calendar, and in Save the Bay. Herb and Garden Festival: The 16th annual Pennsylvania Herb and Garden Festival will be April 11 and 12 at Memorial Hall in the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., West Manchester Township. Yard sale: Cityview Community Church, 1655 Roosevelt Ave, Manchester Township, will hold a community yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 12, rain or shine. Spaces are available for $10. Pancake breakfast fundraiser for senior center: September House Senior Center will be holding an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast fundraiser from 7 to 10 a.m. April 12 at the center, 1251 W. King St., West York. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 10 years old and younger. Breakfast meat and drink are included in the ticket price, but refills cost extra. Jefferson Fire Company pancake breakfast: The Jefferson Fire Company is holding an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast 6:30 to 10 a.m. April 12. The menu includes all-you-can-eat pancakes and scrambled eggs; plus a slice of Dutch supper sausage. Orange juice, coffee, tea and milk will be available. The cost is $7 for adults, $5 for children 6 to 12 years old, and free for children 5 and younger.
Learn about river-mapping history: The York County Heritage Trust's monthly Second Saturday program will be 10:30 a.m. April 12 at the Historical Society Museum, 250 E. Market St., York. The program will feature June Lloyd, librarian emerita of the York County Heritage Trust. Lloyd will discuss Benjamin Henry Latrobe's efforts, in 1801, to map the Susquehanna River. The PowerPoint presentation will feature early maps and watercolors created by Latrobe. All Second Saturday sessions are free and open to the public. No registration is required. Penn State Harrisburg undergraduate open house: Penn State Harrisburg will hold an undergraduate open house 9 a.m. April 12. The event will present information to prospective students about the college's more than 30 bachelor's degree programs and options for completing the first two years of study leading to more than 160 undergraduate majors offered throughout Penn State. The session will include opportunities to talk with faculty, staff, students, and off-campus housing representatives; participate in a campus fair; obtain admission requirements, financial aid information, and career services information; and tour campus. Welcome spring at Pinchot Park: The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is offering a spring wildflower walks at Gifford Pinchot State Park. They will be 1 p.m. April 12 and 1:30 p.m. April 19. Park volunteers, and wildflower enthusiasts, will lead the easy to moderate walks, identifying the spring blossoms and sharing tidbits of interest about them. All walks meet in the Conewago Day Use area, in the parking area near Pavilion No. 2 (Sunnyside pavilion). Wear sturdy footwear and bring bottled water. All walks are for those 10 and older. Graduate scholarship: The York Branch of the American Association of University Women will again award a scholarship to a York County woman who is pursuing either a master's or doctoral degree. The recipient of the graduate scholarship must be a woman who has completed a bachelor's degree and is a resident of York County or a graduate of a York County high school or a member of the York AAUW. Hikes planned: The York Hiking Club has several hikes planned this month.
* Short hike/walk April 16: Three mile hike/walk at Rocky Ridge County Park. Meet at Rocky Ridge in the rear parking lot at 6 p.m. Bring hiking or tennis shoes. The hike leader is Elyshia Menkin.
* Short hike, April 23: Join Lore and Allen Britton on a four-mile hike starting at the Brittons' home. They will hike to Lake Redman for a pleasant hike skirting the lake. Meet at 1:30 p.m. For details and starting location call the Brittons at 717-741-0624.

Civil War Roundtable meeting: The York Civil War Roundtable's monthly meeting will be 7 p.m. April 16 in the meeting hall of the York County Heritage Trust's Historical Society Museum, 250 E. Market St., York. The guest speaker will be Mike Plunkett, presenting 'Paddy Has Gone for a Soldier: Songs and Stories of the Soldiers of the Irish Brigade.' Meetings of the York Civil War Roundtable take place the third Wednesday of every month, except December, and are free and open to the public. Memorial Day essay contest: The York-Adams Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, is accepting entries for its 2014 Workers' Memorial Day Essay Contest. One winning high-school student will be awarded a $500 cash prize. The contest is open to graduating seniors attending high schools in York or Adams counties who plan to pursue post-secondary education. The winning entry will be judged based on the submission of an essay selected from a list of five topics. This year's Worker's Memorial Day observance will be 6 p.m. April 28 at Kiwanis Lake. Youth Native American investigation: Indian Steps Museum will host youths 8 to 12 years old in a program that blends history and archeology. The group will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. April 24 and May 1, 8 and 15. Participants will develop and practice archeology skills as they experience the lost culture of the Susquehannock people. At the conclusion of the program, the youths will have the opportunity to interview a local archeologist and receive their own native name as they gather around the stone table in the Kiva at Indian Steps. Pet photos with the Easter bunny: The York County SPCA is offering pet photos with the Easter bunny 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 19 at the SPCA, 3159 Susquehanna Trail, Manchester Township. The cost is $5, and all proceeds benefit the York County SPCA.
Free Easter luncheon: St. John Episcopal Church will hold a free Easter luncheon 12:30 to 2 p.m. April 20 at 140 N. Beaver St., York, for individuals and families in the York area who otherwise might not have the opportunity to celebrate the Easter holiday with a meal. The luncheon is open to everyone, especially those who are shelter-bound, homeless or living alone. Meal includes ham with all the fixings, beverages, desserts and special Easter treats for the children. In an effort to say a special thank you to those people who keep us safe on a daily basis, all members of any York city or county emergency response team, ambulance team, police force or fire department are also invited to attend. For those on duty, a 'phone-in-for-pickup' service is available. Orders for pickup on Easter can be placed through April 17 by calling 717-848-1862, ext. 7. Volunteers needed for Relay For Life: The American Cancer Society of Southern York County is looking for volunteers for the Relay For Life of Southern York. Your wishes in a health crisis: A free seminar titled 'Your Life - Your Wishes,' which talks about how to manage your wishes in the event of a health crisis, will be 7 to 9 p.m. April 23 at Four Points Sheraton, 1650 Toronita St., Manchester Township. KPETS: Keystone Pet-Enhanced Therapy Services, is a nonprofit organization whose clients may benefit from the healing and rehabilitative effects of the animal/human bond. Children will be able to visit the library to read to a dog, one on one, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 6. The dogs who will participate have been specifically trained to be good, patient listeners. Children may visit the library to spend 15 minutes reading to a therapy dog. If you would like to have your child participate, call the East Berlin Community Library at 717-259-9000 or stop by at 105 Locust St., to choose a time slot. Bring a book along that you would like to read or arrive at the library with enough time so you can find a book before your allotted time.
Penn State Master Gardener volunteer orientation: An orientation session for Penn State Master Gardener volunteer applicants will be 2 to 5 p.m. April 30 at the Extension Office, 112 Pleasant Acres Road, Springettsbury Township. Attendees who are interested in volunteering will have an opportunity to apply and complete the pretest during the orientation. Trainees will attend a series of classes held 2:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays from Aug. 20 through mid-December. After completing the classes and a 10-minute presentation, trainees must volunteer a minimum of 50 hours before becoming certified as Master Gardeners. York Catholic hosts evening with Merril Hoge: Merril Hoge, ESPN sportscaster and former Pittsburgh Steeler, will speak May 16 at Heritage Hills to benefit York Catholic High School's James Forjan Focus Fund. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and Hoge's speech at 7:30 p.m. In 2003, Hoge was faced with finding a way to overcome non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He fought with the same tenacity that got him to the NFL and beat cancer. Hoge is a longtime board chairman of the Highmark Caring Foundation and Caring Place Centers, which provide a place for grieving children, adolescents and their families to cope with the loss of a parent or loved one. Cost is $100 for the dinner and Hoge's 'Find a Way' speech. Sponsorships are available that include a VIP reception prior to the event. See park on guided ride: The York County Department of Parks and Recreation will host a summer park excursion June 20 at Highpoint Scenic Vista. The 60-minute ride is designed to transport people of limited mobility through the park to see the park's natural beauty and hear about local history by York County Parks program coordinator Jeri Jones and local geologist Mary Ann Schlegel. Departures times are 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Participants are transported by the 'People Mover,' a trailer pulled by a pickup truck. The event will be cancelled if it rains. Book Blast donations: The York County Heritage Trust is now accepting donations of gently-used books for the annual Book Blast taking place Aug. 14 to 16. Books may be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays at the Historical Society Museum, 250 E. Market St., York. The last day for donations is June 28. The Book Blast event is held at the Trust's Agricultural & Industrial Museum, 217 W. Princess St., York. Most books are accepted, with the following exceptions: Reader's Digests, encyclopedias, magazines, incomplete sets, and textbooks. Book Blast is a free event, and proceeds benefit the collections, programs and educational activities of the Trust. Hospitality Shop volunteers needed: Because of the retirement of several longtime volunteers, Hanover Hospital's Hospitality Shop is hoping to find individuals in the community interested in volunteering, particularly on evenings and weekends. The Hanover Hospital Auxiliary has provided the Hospitality Shop since 1954. The shop offers a wide range of quality merchandise, reasonably priced, for the shopping convenience of hospital visitors, patients and staff, and is the auxiliary's largest source of revenue. Profits directly support hospital programs and continuing education for hospital employees. With the assistance of staff and volunteers, the Hospitality Shop is open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Individuals are being sought who may have recently retired from active employment and have extra time to share, or are new to the area and looking for opportunities to serve Hanover Hospital and the community. Meal-delivery drivers needed: White Rose Senior Center is looking for committed people to deliver meals to homebound seniors in the northeast section of York. Support groups meet regularly: National Alliance on Mental Illness PA York County, a local branch of a national organization designed to educate, support and advocate for individuals who are affected by mental illness, holds monthly support groups. Preschool accepting registrations: The Little Lambs of Grace Preschool at Grace United Methodist Church, 85 York St., Wellsville, is accepting registrations for students for the 2014-15 school year. Classes for 3-year-old students are 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at a cost of $80 per month. Classes for 4-year-olds are 9 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at a cost of $100 per month. Donate a car, help seniors: Given up driving? Have a car you no longer drive? You can get a tax deduction for donating it to Jewish Family Services of York. As long as the car has an engine, and you have the title, JFS will come get it for free. Proceeds from the sale of the vehicle will benefit JFS' senior program. JFS helps seniors of all faiths in York with such programs as Wise Options, which helps families find resources to cope with the challenges of aging, and Staying Connected, an essential transportation program for seniors who don't drive. Help for cancer patients: The American Cancer Society provides a wide range of emotional and practical support for patients, their families, their caregivers, and their communities from the time of diagnosis to the end of the cancer experience. Programs include trained cancer information specialists who are available 24 hours a day by phone; Look Good, Feel Better, a free community-based national service that teaches female cancer patients beauty techniques to help restore their appearance and self-image during chemotherapy and radiation treatments; Reach to Recovery volunteers, who offer information and support to patients before, during and after breast-cancer treatment; Road to Recovery volunteers, who provide cancer patients free transportation to and from cancer treatments, cancer-related doctor appointments and bloodwork; and a free wig bank is available at the American Cancer Society, 924-N Colonial Ave, York, by appointment or walk-in from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Free litter disposal: York County Solid Waste Authority is offering a free litter disposal program throughout the year. York County organizations, civic groups, schools and neighborhoods that want to clean up litter can dispose of it free of charge at the York County Resource Recovery Center. Groups must register to participate by calling Jen Cristofoletti at the Solid Waste Authority at 717-845-1066. Participants will be asked to provide information regarding the type of organization, contact person, phone number, address and location of area to be cleaned. Once registered, groups will receive guidelines for participation and a vehicle dashboard placard that will enable them to enter the Resource Recovery Center to deliver litter. Recyclable materials must be separated from the litter and recycled. There is a recycling drop-off center across from the Resource Recovery Center that can accept plastic (Nos. 1 through 7); steel, bimetal and aluminum cans; newsprint; dry cardboard and paperboard; and unbroken clear and colored glass.
Class of 1958 meets monthly: Members of the class of 1958 of William Penn Senior High School will meet 9 a.m. the last Tuesday of the month at Lyndon Diner in West Manchester Township. Senior center seeks board members: White Rose Senior Center, 27 S. Broad St., York, is looking for a few new board members. The board of directors meets at 8:30 a.m. the second Thursday of each month at the senior center. Currently, the board consists of people who have a backgrounds in legal service, financial management, human services, real estate and interior design.
