Apopka dogfighting ring: Animal Services to host adoption sale to make room ...

The group of men and women arrested after Apopka Police busted a dogfighting ring Tuesday night will make their first appearance in court this morning.

Officers caught the crowd of about 40 people engaged in an active dogfight at 209 W. 7 th Street around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, rescuing more than 30 wounded and malnourished dogs - mostly pit-bull mixes.

A total of 26 people were taken to Orange County Jail. Two of them have prior cases involving animal cruelty or violating county nuisance animal ordinances: Adell Dawson, 39, and Benjamin Ponder, 26.

Records show that Dawson and another arrestee, Mona Cumberland, live at the Apopka home, which officers called 'filthy' and 'deplorable' because of the pungent stench of animal feces and festering dog wounds.

Two children - who also live at the home - were removed and placed with their grandparents, according to police. The Department of Children and Families were notified, police spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Walsh said.

The 34 dogs rescued from the dogfight are being treated by Animal Services.

The group's court hearing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

This is a developing story.
