Saskatchewan Fashion Week wows audiences all three nights (with galleries)


From fabulous felt hats that will also be showcased on a Paris runway this fall to romantic and feminine dresses by a 15-year-old. the youngest designer to show at a Canadian fashion week. the third annual Saskatchewan Fashion Week (SFW) didn't disappoint.


Three sold-out nights of runway shows in the sound stage of the Canada Saskatchewan Production Studios were greeted with enthusiasm by style-conscious fashion aficionados. The energy level and crowd appreciation grew each night, culminating with a standing ovation for Saskatoon designer Laurie Brown, who closed out the impressive three-day event by transforming her creations on the runway. changing the silhouette from an over-thetop exaggerated cocoon to a classic hourglass figure. The audience cheered and applauded as she quickly zipped and snapped to convert jackets into a skirt or pants.


Both established and emerging designers demonstrated the scope of their creativity, featuring everything from wearable, European-inspired designs by Regina's Ashley Kasdorf of KAZZ Clothing to spectacular runway looks, such as large wings for a scantilyclad male model by Regina accessory designer Anastasia Pearce of Theme and Variation.


Showing jewelry on the runway is no easy feat. But Rachel Mielke's Hillberg & Berk team did an impressive job of showcasing their luxury jewelry collection. layering amazing statement pieces, and dressing models to enhance, not detract from the jewelry.


Retailers kicked off each and versatile designer apparel, shoes and accessories. In true Paris runway fashion, The Vintage Vault boutique in Yorkton. a real crowd pleaser. created looks that featured everything from wild, colourful fascinators to purses in full bloom. offering a visual smorgasbord of current and vintage style and runway pizzazz.


Originally, 21 designers. 12 emerging and nine established. were to showcase their creations. But one emerging designer was cut from the opening night lineup at the last minute. Comedic event host Amy Matysio pleasantly entertained and impressively kept each evening's lineup moving quickly. In fact, each night's runway show stayed ahead of schedule. a true rarity for fashion events.


Emerging designers showcased a diverse collection of impressive designs. from reconstructed materials transformed into haute fashion by Saskatoon's fashion forward Stevie Crowne of War Paint to romantic and feminine dresses by 15-yearold Sage Wosminity of Regina, who intrigued and impressed with the maturity of her designs.


Regina's Dean Renwick, who has mentored many of the province's emerging designers, was back at SFW after a one-year hiatus. His structured and sophisticated limited-edition designs wowed the audience.


Sonja Clifton-Remple was the only designer to show as both a designer and retailer. Wearing that combination of hats was evident in her figure-flattering, well-tailored


designs, which have definite commercial appeal.


Janis Procyk of Prahsik Designs was the winner of the Fashion Forward Emerging Designer Award, presented by Dr. Roberta McKay (who wore Dean Renwick designs each night during SFW) and Elmer Brenner.


On Saturday night, event organizers agreed SFW 2014, in its new venue in the sound stage rather than in a large tent in downtown Regina, was a huge success. 'I think it's been an overwhelming response of people appreciating the growth of not only the venue and the experience of the event, but also just the growth of our designers,' said Candyce Fiessel, who founded SFW in 2012 with Chris Pritchard and Chelsea O'Connell. 'They have really made each other grow. challenging each other to become better ... and become their own designer network.'


'It's all fantastic. There are so many creative people. And that's what it's all about. to celebrate the creativity of Saskatchewan,' McKay said. 'I love it!'
