Marchesa to bring glamour to London fashion week

British brand Marchesa will mark its 10th anniversary this year with a first show at London Fashion Week. The brand, previously a mainstay on the New York fashion week schedule, will show its spring/summer 2015 collection in September in a one-off move to London. The brand, designed by Georgina Chapman and Karen Craig, will provide a welcome injection of glossy glamour to the London schedule.

Marchesa is all about red-carpet worthy design - an association boosted by Chapman's marriage to movie producer Harvey Weinstein in 2007. Chapman, a former model, is sleek and elegant - and no stranger to the red carpet herself. She channels this into Marchesa. The London front row may be used to a mix of hip streetwear and tweedy tradition but with Marchesa they will get a taste of modern Hollywood glamour. Expect A-list celebrities, big name models - and big hair-dos.

Chapman and Weinstein's places at the fashion table are already set - Weinstein is pals with Anna Wintour and recently bought the dormant fashion house, Charles James. The timing has Wintour's fingerprints all over it - James is the subject of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's spring exhibition, and the theme of this month's Wintour-curated Met Ball. No further details have been announced but Chapman, as you might expect, is creative consultant.

While it is tempting to grumble about nepotism, Chapman designing James actually makes a lot of sense. The designer, often called the first American couturier, was all about elegance, ladylike dressing and dream-like gowns that cost thousands when he designed in the 1940s and 50s. Chapman's sensibility fits right into this tradition. Her husband may be financing it, but, as an expert in glamour both on and off the red carpet, she would be a savvy fit to design it.
