Fashion Week auditions in Greenville

You have 25 minutes to create a fantasy makeup look that translates effortlessly from studio to runway. Starting...NOW!

On Monday, Stephen Wilkerson, a longtime hair stylist at Sherif Zaki Salon and the Oasis Spa in Greenville, held auditions for a team of hair stylists and makeup artists to accompany him to Heartland Fashion Week and the New York Fashion Awards in September.

Wilkerson, who has appeared at fashion weeks in Philadelphia and Atlantic City, is head stylist for the international event.

Nearly 20 competitors from Philadelphia, New York, Savannah, GA, Charlotte, NC, and more were tested on three timed looks: Couture, Ready-to-Wear and Fantasy. No one from Delaware auditioned.

But four Delawareans served as models, including former Miss Delaware contestants Charity Cramer and Keturah Braithwaite. Wilkerson recruited other models from Apple Store employees at Christiana Mall.

Virtually all of the hair and makeup artists who auditioned were selected for the team. The crew will style more than 60 models at the fashion event, along with magazine shoots throughout the year.

In its third year, Heartland Fashion Week is run by Heartland Modeling Agency, based in Scandinavia. It is not affiliated with the larger Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, which is scheduled from Sept. 4 to 11 in New York.

Featuring eight designers, the one-day Heartland event at the Grand Masonic Lodge on Sept. 13 is expected to attract more than 1,000 people, according to organizers. These include fashion celebrities, magazine editors and style bloggers. Fashion rock stars like Janet Dickinson, Jay 'Miss J' Alexander and Nigel Barker are among the award nominees.

Joined by Heartland CEO Jorgen Jorgensen, a former bodyguard and martial artist, Wilkerson judged the group of freelance hair and makeup artists and salon owners on their creativity, speed and attention to detail.

He said he was disappointed that the First State was not represented among the competitors.

Given its proximity to Philadelphia and New York, 'Delaware has some of the best hair stylists in the country,' he said.
