Young model talents Elodie Russell and Justin Lacko were also revealed as the faces of the festival, which was officially launched by Lord Mayor Robert Doyle.
He said this year's consumer focused festival will be bigger and better than ever with 212 events, featuring three quarters of its designers as locals.
'Sometimes you see these international catwalk shows and wonder 'Who would wear that and where?' he says.
'Everything you see (during MSFW) you can go out and buy from our stores.'
Hart, who returned to Melbourne after getting engaged in the South of France last week, says she's excited to be home to support local retailers and designers.
'I'm in my element. There's nothing like coming home for me and spring is my favourite time of year,' she says.
The blonde beauty, who lives in the US, says she has come home with an empty suitcase to fill with fabulous local fashions.
'You can see what you want to buy and buy it straight away,' she says.
Hart follows in the fashionable footsteps of her Victoria Secret model sister, Jessica, who was the face of the festival in 2009.
The festival will kick off with a special opening night shopping event for consumers at Melbourne's top retail destinations.
Mr Doyle says the event attracted 35,000 people last year and generated $3.5 million.
MSFW runs Aug 30 to Sep 7.
