MANILA - His stay in the country was short and sweet, but British supermodel David Gandy made a lasting impact on Filipinos, particularly those who want to build careers in fashion.

Gandy, best known as the favorite male face of Dolce & Gabbana, joined the recently concluded Philippine Fashion Week by taking part in the show of SM Men's Fashion.

He has been tapped as the newest endorser of SM's men's clothing line, joining Daniel Matsunaga, Hideo Muraoka, Fabio Ide and Rafael del Prado.

The SM Men's Fashion show held Friday featured models wearing the brand's casual pieces, with Gandy standing out in a crisp suit.

While he only appeared for less than three minutes on the runway, Gandy drew a lot of applause from the audience at halls 2 and 3 of the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

'It's been wonderful, nothing's been too much trouble. We're enjoying it here,' he said in a press conference shortly before the fashion show.

Taking risks

Many of his fans across the globe have been praising Gandy for his beautiful blue eyes and his toned body, but the British supermodel believes that these are not his best assets.

For Gandy, his stubbornness and perseverance led him to where he is today.

'I've always wanted to think outside the box,' he said. 'My stubbornness and my perseverance are perhaps [my biggest assets]. These probably took me to where I am now.'

While most people think that modeling is all about glamour, he stressed that he also went through several challenges and failures.

'I think you learn something along the way,' he said. 'I've had plenty of failures, and I think that's an exciting time, when you're risking something.'

He went on to mention the importance of leaving one's comfort zone and thinking outside the box when it comes to fashion.

'You can become successful by taking risks instead of following the crowd and playing it safe,' he said.

Variety

Gandy said the offer to be part of SM Men's Fashion came at the right time as he was planning to expand his brand in Asia.

The British supermodel lauded the local brand for offering a variety of clothing options for men.

'What's nice about SM Men's Fashion is that they come in a wide variety of options. It makes it tangible for all men, from the classic designs to the fashion forward. Whatever you need is there,' he said. 'I think being an individual is important, because sometimes what others see as fashionable may be ugly to some.'

'I want to make male fashion a tangible element to everyone,' he added. 'When SM Men's Fashion approached us, [I knew] it was a collaboration that would work very well.'

Aside from SM Men's Fashion and D&G, Gandy also represents the car brand Jaguar.
