Sao Paulo Fashion Week: Ancient garbs and ballerinas take to the runway

To the other side of the world now for another major fashion event. Sao Paulo Fashion Week, started with a bang on Monday, as supermodel Karlie Kloss took to the runway.

Kloss, a Victoria's Secret Angel and ranked number seven model in the world by Models.com, paraded on the runway for opening act Animale's bold new 2014 Winter collection.

Animale designers chose to play with the dark mysticism winter often evokes by mixing themes of Scottish gothic with elements of British punk. Seemingly not afraid of winter's chill the collection featured many leggy, short cut dresses and transparent prints.

Designer Priscila Darolt explained the combination of ancient and modern themes.

Priscila Darolt, Animale Designer, said, 'We are showing a collection inspired by ancient peoples from Great Britain mixed with contemporary influences. We are searching for this convergence between the ancient aesthetic and something contemporary.'

Originating in Rio de Janeiro, Animale is a label that has grown over the past 20 years and is now sold in over 500 locations.

Cris Nobrega, a fashion blogger at the Animale show, was impressed with the choice of colour.

Fashion designer Cris Nobrega said, 'The colours were brilliant. The burgundy, the military green, mixed with leather. A lot of very cool things which I adored.'

Uma Raquel Davidowicz's show also had everyone talking...Ballerinas from the Sao Paulo Dance Company took the place of models, performing routines that kept the audience transfixed.

Uma, known for its consistently modern and dynamic cuts and minimalist approach to colour, chose to accentuate the comfortable aspects of this winter collection by using dancers who have considerably more muscular frames than the sleek runway models.

There is still a lot to come from Sao Paulo Fashion Week, which runs until November 1, including hometown star Gisele Bundchen making her return to the Sao Paulo catwalk on October 31.
