Ph FASHION WEEK S/S '14 | Day 1: Petit Monde turns Japanese in its debut ...

Cherry blossoms or sakura in full bloom, a ramp with a torii gate of a temple and models wearing kimono-inspired apparels-Petit Monde, a locally-grown brand, kick-started Philippine Fashion Week with their Spring Summer 2014 collections inspired by the Japanese aesthetics.

The retail brand is a first-timer to Philippine Fashion Week, the longest running fashion event in the country. Petit Monde opened its Spring/Summer 2014 edition by unveiling the label's four new collections catering to young Filipina women.Past and present celebrity endorsers such as Maja Salvador, Sunshine Cruz, Ana Roces and Cheska Garcia walked the runway and wowed fans during the show at the Mall of Asia Atrium on Wednesday, October 23.

Anne Curtis, a former Petit Monde endorser who started her modeling stint for the brand at age 12, wasn't around to celebrate the brand's 25 years in the business. Ms. Curtis is currently an endorser of another clothes label.

Styled by Pam Quiñones, Petit Monde's new collections consisted of Mori, Saku, Urahara and Sekai, which showcase a spectrum of bright colors as well as new silhouettes for the brand.

The collection showed a transition from kimono-inspired outfits that showed different ways of wearing the traditional Japanese dress to streetwear fashion and eventually, to more cosmopolitan-designed apparels.

Setting the pace during the opening was Maja Salvador who introduced the first collection, Mori, which means 'rainforest.' This collection features designs that embody nature, with leaf prints as its dominant image. Outfits shifting from light colors like green to darker palettes were in the form of wrap dresses and billowy skirts all made from lightweight fabrics that are perfect for the summer season.

From Mori, the collection transitioned to Saku, which means 'bloom.' Led by Sunshine Cruz, the Saku collection is inspired by the Japanese spring season's icon, sakura or cherry blossoms. Apparels from this collection used light pink and blue palettes and showcased the cropped kimono in light and soft fabrics. The mood evoked in this collection was light and airy, the better for its wearer to move freely.

Apart from exploring the traditional kimono, Petit Monde also took inspiration from Japanese street fashion. Dubbed as Urahara, this collection features street fashion from Uruhara, the backstreets of Harajuku and an iconic place in Japan for fashion trends. Bold casuals in tribal and geometric prints in flowing and stretchable fabrics prevailed in the showcase of this collection as led by Cheska Garcia.

Sekai, which means world, was the last collection from Petit Monde. Led by Ana Roces, Sekai is a 'fashion forward' collection that mixes the elements of the previous collections. Petit Monde describes the collection as 'more evolved and cosmopolitan' and uses new silhouettes and rare fabrics to evoke a modern feel. The unique prints and patterns of this collection resembles a high-end fashion that Petit Monde managed to translate into a retail, wearable items.

Established by sisters Carolyn Tan Chong and Dorothy Tan Tionson in 1988, Petit Monde is a Filipino apparel brand that aims to dress up young women and offers other wardrobe needs like shoes, bags, accessories and fragrances.
