Stylin': NCCU grad presents first collection at New York Fashion Week

Though she studied biology at N.C. Central University and was on track to be an anesthesiologist, Amanda Williamson is now a burgeoning fashion star.

Interested in clothing design since childhood, Williamson decided to forgo a career in medicine to launch a women's clothing label, Ennyluap ( ennyluap.com), in 2011. In September, she presented her first collection at New York Fashion Week during a designer showcase at the Helen Mills Center.

'Presenting at New York Fashion Week was an amazing experience,' says Williamson. 'I also had the opportunity of shooting a segment for the STYLE Network; that was very fun. Being a presenting designer in New York is amazing; everyone treats you like you're someone.'

Williamson also received a little love from across the pond, being featured in British Vogue earlier this year. 'British Vogue introduced Ennyluap as a national brand, and I have since gained attention both locally and abroad since its release,' she says.

Before the international attention came, Williamson's biggest cheerleader was Kendra Leonard, owner of Raleigh's Art of Style boutique. Leonard gave Williamson her big break, carrying the Ennyluap line in her store.

'She gave me my first opportunity to show my designs to the world,' Williamson says. 'I love her more than words can express!'

Williamson's Fashion Week collection, with colorful dresses and separates in classic, wearable silhouettes, exemplifies her design aesthetic.

'I love lines, colors and structure,' she says. 'I try to make every design practical, and on a broad scale, make Ennyluap a contemporary high-end everyday collection.'

The collection currently is available at Art of Style and at Dream Day Affairs in Conyers, Ga. Williamson is in talks to bring the line to additional boutiques and a major department store.
